US sanctions Iran officers, morality police over demise of Mahsa Amini

The U.S. introduced it could impose sanctions on senior Iran safety officers and Iran’s morality police following the demise of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

“In response to this and other human rights violations in Iran – including the violent suppression of peaceful protests – the United States is imposing sanctions on Iran’s Morality Police and senior security officials who have engaged in serious human rights abuses, pursuant to Executive Order 13553,” Blinken mentioned in an announcement. “The Morality Police, an element of Iran’s Law Enforcement Forces (LEF), arrests women for wearing ‘inappropriate’ hijab and enforces other restrictions on freedom of expression. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is further designating Haj Ahmad Mirzaei and Mohammad Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi, both of whom are senior officials in the Morality Police.”


The Treasury Department’s OFAC additionally focused seven senior leaders of Iran’s safety organizations.

Today’s action to sanction Iran’s Morality Police and senior Iranian security officials responsible for this oppression demonstrates the Biden-Harris Administration’s clear commitment to stand up for human rights and the rights of women, in Iran and globally.”

At least 9 protesters have been killed in clashes with Iranian safety forces since violence erupted over the weekend after Amini’s demise.


Amini was arrested on Sept. 14 by the LEF’s Morality Police, who mentioned she didn’t correctly cowl her hair with the Islamic headband, which is necessary for Iranian girls, and despatched her to an “educational and orientation” class at police headquarters. 

She was transferred to a hospital that very same day in a coma and died two days later from inner accidents.
