Owning a Shiny Pokémon is one of the last perks you can have as a Trainer. There is only a 0.02% chance of finding one in the field. However, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have made hunting for Shiny a bit easier with the benefits of sandwich encounters and multiple overworld Pokemon spawning. Still, how can you tell that a Pokemon is Shiny at a glance? Let’s find out.
Is there a way to tell if a shiny Pokémon appears in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
Apart from noticing the color difference from afar, there is no other way to tell that Pokemon is a Shiny from afar. This isn’t like Pokémon Legends: Arceus, where a unique sound effect plays when a shiny Pokémon appears on the map. Walk or mount Koraidon/Miraidon slowly if you are hunting Shiny. Get into areas with massive outbreaks as much as possible to increase your chances of finding one.

However, once you get into a battle with a Shiny Pokémon, there will be a star confetti animation to show that it is one. So if you’re not sure if Pokemon is Shiny or not, just go into a battle with it to check. This is especially true for Shiny Pokémon that are just a shade of the original color scheme like Ghastly, Quaxly, and Sprigatito.
Are there Shiny Pokemon locked in Scarlet & Violet?
If you plan to hunt Shiny Pokémon, you should know that there are Pokémon that are Shiny locked in the game. Specifically, these are Pokemon provided by NPCs (such as Starter Pokemon and NPC-traded Pokemon) and Legendaries from the box art. Although, Fuecoco, Quaxly, and Sprigatito can later be hunted by Shiny in the wild.
