U.Ok. newspaper The Telegraph reported that she died “suddenly yet peacefully.”

Publishing large HarperCollins stated that “bestselling author Dame Hilary Mantel DBE died suddenly yet peacefully yesterday, surrounded by close family and friends, aged 70.” It added: “Hilary Mantel was one of the greatest English novelists of this century and her beloved works are considered modern classics. She will be greatly missed.” DBE stands for “Damehood of the Order of the British Empire.”

Mantel made a reputation for herself with historic fiction, brief tales and memoirs. Her Wolf Hall trilogy is a fictional account of Thomas Cromwell’s rise to energy within the court docket of King Henry VIII as chief minister.
